The Living History of the Main Street Parade

One of the most anticipated and exciting events at the Camden Show is the main street parade along Argyle Street, featuring teams of bullocks and horses. In the past, teams of horses and bullocks passing along Camden Main Street were common. Today, it is a rare event indeed. It is hard to beat the authenticity of living history, with the sounds, sights, and smells of the past coming to life before your eyes. The parade consists of teamsters and their horse teams, bullockies and their teams of bullocks, old cars, and show displays. The participants line up in Exeter Street, move along John Street, then turn into Argyle and make their way back to the showground along Cawdor Road. With cameras handy, the crowd lined the route waiting to grab a snap for posterity.

What a sight!. Authentic living history in Argyle Street. The teamsters and their teams of horses were common sights on Argyle Street over 100 years ago when they brought silver ore from Yerranderie to the Camden rail head. Camden Show 2026 (Camden Show Society)

A bit of farming history moving along John Street that would not have been out of place 100 years ago. Tractors replaced horse teams in the Camden district in the early 20th century. Here is one example, followed by a historic truck from the early 20th century used for deliveries and carting produce. Camden Show 2026. (I Ramsay)
The living history of the main street parade extends to the mid-20th century with 1940 motoring moving along John Street. The car is carrying the Camden Show Young Women winners. Camden Show 2026 (I Ramsay)
A bit of music in John Street. Bands are an essential part of any street parade, and the Camden Show main street parade is no exception. Bands have been an essential element of street parades along Argyle Street since the late 1800s, with the first Camden Brass Band. Camden Show 2026 (I Ramsay)
